Soviet Border at Helmstedt. Checkpoint Alpha.

 

The Helmstedt–Marienborn border crossing was the largest border crossing between East and West Germany, and was monitored by British and Soviet military police. The crossing was located on the Autobahn 2 near the East German village of Marienborn, and was the shortest route between West Germany and West Berlin. The Customs clearance at Marienborn known as The Deathstar was staffed by East German border staff, many if not all of the border guards on the East German side were Stasi wearing border guard uniforms.
