Grossenhain Airbase
Grossenhain in East Germany was home to the Soviet 296th Fighter Bomber regiment which operated MiG-27s, tasked with ground attack duties against NATO advancing forces. The photo is an SU-24 which also operated from East German bases in a similar role. The SU-24 was a swing wing fighter bomber, not dissimilar in tasking to the 20th TFW’s F111s operated from Upper Heyford in the UK.However, the F111 was rather more successful than the SU-24 in that

it didn’t keep crashing. The Soviets lost quite a few SU-24s before they ever faced an enemy.
